In Massachusetts, the state no longer is in charge of insurance rates; rather this activity is governed by the insurance industry itself. This occurred in 2008; and as a result, pricing is believed to be more reasonable. That said, this does not mean a certain level of Massachusetts auto insurance is not compulsory: The State has not totally left governing to the insurance industry.
Aside from what has been said, you are entitled to a safe driver's discount when seeking competitive pricing within the Massachusetts auto insurance market. Make certain you ask your insurance agent about discounting your policy if you have enjoyed a safe driving record.
Back to the State's portion of governing Massachusetts auto insurance, it may be said certain minimum limits with respect to liability apply. In the state of Massachusetts, the limit is $20,000 (USD) for bodily injury coverage. This means the insurer will cover $20,000, per person, with respect to other parties to an accident where you are at fault.
Additionally, you must carry $5,000 (USD) in property damage coverage for an accident, where again, you are responsible. Liability coverage, once again, is the mandated or compulsory insurance you must purchase to be legal to drive within the state of Massachusetts; and unlike insurance rates is (once again) still governed by the State.
Secondly, you may wish to carry comprehensive insurance as part of your Massachusetts auto insurance plan. Comprehensive insurance is add-on coverage and is not state mandated. Comprehensive Massachusetts auto insurance covers everything that is non-accident related such as if you hit a deer while driving your car; or in case your car is stolen or burglarized.
In order to keep rates to a minimum will require you keep your car garaged in the evening or when not driving it; and installing anti-theft devices such as burglar alarms or items to immobilize your car. Make certain you mention to your Massachusetts agent these items are installed when seeking lower Massachusetts car insurance premiums with regard to comprehensive coverage.
Also, you may wish to purchase personal injury insurance which provides coverage for medical treatments you and your passengers (may) require should you become involved in an accident, regardless who is at fault. Please make note: the compulsory liability insurance is specific to accidents that are caused by you; and not the other driver; or (again) accidents where you are at fault.
In order to keep Massachusetts car insurance rates even lower, you may consider raising your deductible with respect to the coverage you carry. In order to do so will require: you carry enough in total overall savings in order to easily absorb the total out-of-pocket expense should an accident occur.
If your savings is adequate, you may wish to raise your deductible from $500 (USD) to $1,000 (USD). In so doing, the reduction in premiums can be quite substantial: up to (nearly) one-third off of what you are currently paying.
